Dr. Maurice S. Crandall (Yavapai-Apache)

Dr. Maurice S. Crandall (Yavapai-Apache) is an associate professor of history at Arizona State University and holds a PhD from the University of New Mexico. He is a historian of the Indigenous peoples of the US-Mexico Borderlands, the American West, and public history. Crandall’s 2019 monograph, These People Have Always Been a Republic: Indigenous Electorates in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, 1598–1912 (University of North Carolina Press), won the 2020 Caughey Western History Prize for the most distinguished book on the history of the American West, the 2020 Weber-Clements Prize for best non-fiction book on Southwestern America, and a 2020 Southwest Book Award.
