El Palacio is a print and digital publication covering art, history, and culture in New Mexico and the broader Southwest.

We are looking for freelance writers (reporters, essayists, and poets) and artists (photographers and illustrators) with strong ties to New Mexico to contribute reporting, features, critical essays, profiles, reviews, photo essays, poetry, and more. To best understand what we publish, we highly recommend spending some time on the website to read recent articles. We pay for all commissioned work.

Please pitch article and essay ideas to El Palacio editor Emily Withnall at emily.withnall@dca.nm.gov. If you don’t have a specific pitch in mind and/or you are interested in being assigned work, please email Emily with writing samples and a short list of the types of articles you’d be interested in contributing.

Your pitch should include the following:

• Your full name
• Your website (if applicable)
• Two writing samples as attachments or hyperlinks to published pieces (REQUIRED. They don’t need to be published, and you don’t need to have previous publication experience)
• Your areas of interest/expertise, your geographic location (or connection to New Mexico),
• A brief 1-2 paragraph pitch that outlines your story idea, who you plan to interview, your connection to the topic, and any other relevant information. Your pitch should demonstrate your writing skill. If you are a photographer or illustrator and don’t plan to include writing with your work, please pitch the concept and context for your work and suggestions for writers (if applicable).
• Poets, please submit your work in full. Work should be previously unpublished.

Apart from poetry, El Palacio does NOT accept articles on spec. The editor works closely with writers to develop the angle and story. Reach out to Emily if you have questions.
