Photograph by Adriel Heisey, 2007. The additional rooms and kivas excavated and stabilized by Hewett are still open today, but it is clear that fewer rooms have been excavated than at Pueblo Bonito. A park service road and walking trails for visitors can be seen in and around the pueblo and also on the first bench above the site. Ancient Chacoan roads also led to the site. A famous feature behind the pueblo is the Jackson Staircase, made of steps hacked from the stone, which allowed people to move between Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Alto. The Jackson Staircase is named for William Henry Jackson, a famous early photographer of the West, who published his images of Chaco Canyon in 1878.
