Justice of the Peace William Bickel (center, right) kept a rifle on the bench during the preliminary hearing for those arrested following the Sheriff’s killing in 1935. To his right stands Adjutant General Osborne Wood who led the military occupation of Gallup during the 1933 strike. Wood was the son of famed Army General Leonard Wood, who’d served as Military Governor of Cuba and Governor- General of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War.
