AT FOUR CENTURIES OLD, the City of Holy Faith is still a beauty, with its mix of people, events, cityscapes and architectural elements. To mark Santa Fes birthday, EL PALACIOs annual photography contest, Picture This! will focus on this city, this century; that is to say, photographs of Santa Fe, taken since A.D. 2001 are eligible.

As always, El Pals photo contest is open to all photographers, amateurs and professionals alike. The winning photographs will be published in the magazine, and all will appear on our Web site, www.elpalacio.org. In addition, they will be added to the permanent photographic record at Photo Archives at the Palace of the Governors, where more than 800,000 items including historic photographic prints, cased photographs, glass-plate negatives, film negatives, stereographs, photo postcards, panoramas, color transparencies, and lantern slides are housed already.

The announcement of winning photographs next spring will coincide with events related to an exhibition and publication developed at Photo Archives, both titled Through the Lens, Creating Santa Fe. The exhibition opens in November 21, 2008also the deadline for contest entriesat the Palace of the Governors, about the time the Museum of New Mexico Press will release the book with essays by David Noble, Rina Swentzell, Andy Lovato, Lucy Lippard, Siegfried Halus, and also Mary Anne Redding, curator at Photo Archives, who said, Whether making images about place or images inspired by place, Santa Fe has a long tradition of artist photographers lured to the 'land of enchantment.'
